Youth Needed for Human Rights Education Curriculum Focus Groups

Summary:
Equitas is an international human rights organization that has developed a human rights curriculum for youth in Canada. They have received some funding to adapt the curriculum for British Columbia and are hosting a focus group in Vancouver...

See below for message from Angie (Mapara) Osachoff, Play it Fair! Vancouver Coordinator:

Hello Colleagues, Partners and Friends,

I am really excited to let you all know that we are looking to launch our youth Toolkit: Speaking Rights in British Columbia in the next few months. However, before doing so we would like to conduct targeted focus groups with members of the community to see what the issues are that impact youth in this region. This will permit us to adapt and alter the Toolkit do that is has a BC perspective and addresses your needs.

Speaking Rights is a human rights education project that engages 13-17 year olds in exploring issues that are important to them as they work together to identify strategies to address discrimination, bullying and exclusion. Youth participate in activities and community projects from the Toolkit which open up a space for dialogue and action on issues such as participation, leadership, active citizenship; self-esteem and relationships; violence and intimidation; rights and responsibilities; gender roles; and exclusion, discrimination and racism

The focus group will use dynamic activities to help create dialogue. The date and time for the focus group is as follows:

Youth Focus Groups: (ages 13-17)

Dates: Tuesday February 15, 2011 OR Thursday February 17, 2011

Times: 5:30pm – 8:00pm

Location: Our House Child Care Centre.

123 West 16th Avenue.

Vancouver, B.C.

If you are able to come, then please choose the focus group and date that you will attend and get back to Angie as soon as possible.

I also invite you to share this invitation with your friends, colleagues and the youth you work with. We would like a broad range of participants, and they do not need to have experience with Play it Fair! or the work that Equitas does.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate contacting me.

All the best
