Douglas College instructor Mike Graham Receiving National Inclusive Education Award

Summary:
Mike Graham, instructor of the School-Age Child Care certificate program at Douglas College (David Lam Campus) will be receiving a National Inclusive Education Award from the Canadian Association for Community Living and Inclusion BC.

New Westminster, May 4, 2015 - Mike Graham, instructor of the School-Age Child Care certificate program at Douglas College (David Lam Campus) will be receiving a National Inclusive Education Award from the Canadian Association for Community Living and Inclusion BC.

Nominated by student Kayla Willms, Mike is being honoured for going above and beyond to make his classroom inclusive of all students, including those with developmental disabilities. Kayla, who has autism, has always wanted to work with children and Mike is helping to make that dream a reality.

Kayla says, “I have autism and ADHD so sometimes I can be unfocused. When I get off track, Mr. Graham always brings me back to the subject at hand. He makes me think! I feel my ideas are valued and supported in the class and I feel that he has given myself and all my classmates support. He is an awesome teacher!”

With only two more courses left to complete, Kayla is close to reaching her goal. She credits Mr. Graham for creating a welcoming and supportive space, allowing Kayla to bring a “scribe” to assist her with note taking and comprehension and verbally reciting written text instructions to the class.

Mike Graham’s values of inclusion extend beyond the support he provides for Kayla to the content he teaches and to his role as Director of Programs with the Westminster Children’s After School Society. He values diversity and the unique abilities of every child and is a shining example of how one person can make a big difference.

Mr. Graham will receive the award at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre on May 28, 2015 at noon as part of the Inclusion BC conference. Media are welcome to attend.
